General Information
Somatropin, rh-GH is a pure recombinant growth hormone produced in either Escherichia coli or mammalian cells. The pituitary gland produces endogenous human growth hormone (hGH). Growth hormone was isolated for the first time in 1956, and its structure was discovered in 1972. Prior until 1985, growth hormone (GH) was generated from human cadavers; however, the usage of human derived GH was discontinued due to Creutzfeldt-Jakob virus contamination of the product. Somatropin is approved for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD), growth failure, or short stature, as well as cachexia and AIDS wasting; it is also approved for the treatment of people with short bowel syndrome. Somatropin has been examined for the treatment of HIV-associated adipose redistribution syndrome (HARS); preliminary data suggest that it may reduce visceral adipose tissue. There are several somatropin medications available, each with a different indication and dosing regimen. Product selection should be done with caution because some products may not be interchangeable. The FDA initially approved somatropin in 1987.
