General Information

Somatropin (rh-GH) is a pure recombinant growth hormone produced in either Escherichia coli or mammalian cells. Endogenous human growth hormone (hGH) is produced in the pituitary gland. Growth hormone was initially isolated in 1956, and its structure was discovered in 1972. Prior until 1985, growth hormone (GH) was generated from human cadavers; however, the usage of human derived GH was discontinued due to contamination with the Creutzfeldt-Jakob virus. Somatropin is approved for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD), growth failure, or short stature, as well as cachexia and AIDS wasting; it is also recommended for individuals with short bowel syndrome. Somatropin has been explored in the treatment of HIV-associated adipose redistribution syndrome (HARS); limited short-term data suggest that it may reduce visceral adipose tissue. There are several somatropin medications on the market, each with a different indication and dose regimen. Product selection should be done with caution because products may not be interchangeable. Somatropin was first licensed by the FDA in 1987.
